Good quality tape measures have a slot on the hook that you can attach a nail for an anchor point or to hang the tape measure with.
With the nail attached you can use the tape measure as a compass.
The tape measure hook can be used to scribe a surface once you've measured the required length.
The tape measure can be used as a rough straight edge.
Combined with a pencil the tape measure is a useful scribe.
A handy pointing device or hooking something out of reach.
